01ProCo RAT (or clone)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for this tone. The RAT provides the gritty, compressed distortion character. Without it, the Orange's gain alone will be thicker and less cutting. A Turbo RAT or cheaper Mooer Black Secret gets you there.

Why these settings

Critical issue: your Taylor 814ce is an acoustic guitar with piezo pickup — it cannot replicate the thick humbucker tone of Santiago's Les Paul. The piezo signal is thin, bright, and quacky compared to magnetic pickups. I've rolled the tone knob to 5 and cut treble on the Orange to compensate, but this will sound fundamentally different — more jangly and acoustic-textured. The Orange Crush 20 is warm and mid-forward like the JCM800, so I've pushed mids to 7 and kept bass at 4 to avoid mud from the acoustic's body resonance.

PRO TIPTo get closer to the electric guitar attack, use a heavy pick (1mm+), strike the strings near the bridge, and palm-mute lightly between chord hits. Consider running your Taylor through a magnetic soundhole pickup instead of the piezo for a warmer, more electric-adjacent tone — the Seymour Duncan Woody or Fishman Neo-D are cheap options that transform the signal.
