01MXR 6-Band Graphic EQ (M109)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This pedal is essential to Dime's tone; it creates the V-curve scoop that defines the sound. Without it, push amp mids even lower and treble higher, but you will not fully replicate the surgical mid-cut.
02Noise Gate (any brand — Boss NS-2, ISP Decimator, TC Sentry)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Critical for the tight, gated chug on palm mutes. Without it, the high gain will produce unwanted noise between riffs.
The original used a solid-state Randall with surgical transient response; the MG101CFX is also solid-state, which helps retain that tightness. However, Marshalls are mid-forward where Dime's tone was aggressively scooped — I dropped mids to 2 (vs Dime's amp at 3) to compensate for the MG's inherent mid-presence, and set presence to 0 because the MG's presence circuit adds fizz at high gain that fights the tight low-end. Your Explorer's humbuckers are hotter than the L-500XL, so gain at 9 rather than 10 prevents mud.
