01MXR 6-Band Graphic EQ (M109)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This pedal is critical to Dimebag's tone. It goes BEFORE the amp input, acting as a front-end boost and mid-scoop shaper. The scooped 400-800Hz and boosted highs define the CFH sound. A Behringer EQ700 or Boss GE-7 are budget alternatives.

Why these settings

Your Ibanez GRG has a ceramic humbucker similar in output to Dime's L-500XL, so no gain compensation needed. The Max Music Amp is an unspecified practice amp—without knowing its voicing, I've set a deep mid-scoop (2) and pushed treble (8) to approximate the Randall's solid-state attack. Without an external EQ pedal, this tone will lack the razor-sharp definition Dime achieved; the EQ pedal is the single most important addition to nail this sound.

PRO TIPDimebag palm-muted directly over the bridge pickup with his pick angled sharply—this created the percussive 'chug' attack. Practice muting hard and picking aggressively right at the saddles, not near the neck.
