01Zoom Multi-FX — Distortion Block (DS-1 or Dist+ model if available)

This is the primary gain source — Rhoads ran his amp relatively clean and used the MXR Dist+ for grit. Set amp gain low.

Gain/Drive 4 · Tone 7 · Level 10

02Zoom Multi-FX — Parametric/Graphic EQ Block

Critical for the Rhoads tone — that 500Hz spike is what gives the buzzsaw cut. Place after distortion.

500Hz 10 · 250Hz 7 · 1kHz 6 · 125Hz 3 · 4kHz 2

03Zoom Multi-FX — Delay Block (short slapback)

Simulates room mic ambience from Ridge Farm Studios — very short delay (30-80ms), single repeat, low mix

Why these settings

Your Hondo Strat's single coil is brighter and lower output than Rhoads' Les Paul humbucker — I've dropped treble from original 7 to 6 and pushed mids to 8 (from 6) to compensate for the thinner voice. The MG30CFX OD1 channel is your closest Marshall crunch voicing. Amp gain stays at 3 because the Zoom distortion block is doing the heavy lifting — stacking both would mud out the tight articulation Rhoads was known for.

PRO TIPRhoads' right-hand attack was extremely precise and consistent — practice the main riff with strict alternate picking and let each note ring cleanly before the next. The tone only sounds right when your picking is tight; sloppy attack turns this into mush regardless of settings.
