01Boss SD-1 Super OverDrive (or similar tube screamer-style OD)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This pedal is essential to the tone — it tightens the low end and adds midrange push into the amp's gain stage. A Tube Screamer TS9, Ibanez TS Mini, or any TS-clone will work. Budget option: Joyo Vintage Overdrive (~$30)
The Kustom FX 15 is a solid-state practice amp with limited gain compared to a cranked JCM800. Push the gain higher (7) than the original amp setting would suggest because the Kustom won't break up the same way. The Cort X300's passive humbuckers have less output and compression than Zakk's active EMGs, so treble is boosted slightly to compensate for the missing high-end cut. Without the SD-1, the tone will lack the essential tightness and mid-push — acquiring one transforms this rig.
