RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This pedal is CRITICAL to the Crazy Train tone. Rhoads ran his amp relatively clean and used the Distortion+ for grit. Without it, you will need to push the MT-15's gain higher (to 7), but you will lose the tight, focused midrange character.

Why these settings

The PRS MT-15 is a modern high-gain amp with more saturation and tighter low-end than Rhoads' vintage Marshall. Pull the gain back to 5 (original Marshall was barely breaking up) and push mids to 8 to replicate the 500Hz EQ hump. Your Wolfgang's humbuckers are hotter than Rhoads' LP Custom, so treble stays moderate at 6 to avoid ice-pick highs. Bass at 3 keeps the tight, focused attack Rhoads achieved with Altec speakers.

PRO TIPRhoads picked aggressively right over the bridge pickup with a medium Fender pick held at a slight angle — this digging-in technique created the percussive attack and harmonic overtones that define the Crazy Train riff. Without the pick attack, the tone falls flat regardless of settings.
