01Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive (or similar TS-style)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for the Rhoads tone; the Distortion+ provided his grit while the Marshall stayed relatively clean. The SD-1 replicates the asymmetric clipping character. Run amp gain LOW (as set above) to avoid mud.
The Katana Brown channel replicates the Marshall JMP voicing well. Rhoads ran his Marshall nearly clean with the MXR Distortion+ doing the heavy lifting — without that pedal you'll lack the signature grit and sustain. Mid pushed to 8 compensates for the Ten Band EQ's massive 500Hz boost; bass dropped to 3 because the JS32's humbuckers are hotter than Rhoads' vintage T-Tops and the Katana's Brown voice has more low-end than Altec-loaded cabs.
