01Boss DS-1 Distortion

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This pedal is NON-NEGOTIABLE for the Cobain sound. The DS-1 IS the distortion source; Cobain ran his amp clean and kicked this on for choruses/solo. Without it, the Twin Reverb cannot produce this tone. A DS-1 costs $50 new.

02Electro-Harmonix Small Clone Chorus

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Used on verses (clean, watery shimmer) AND layered with DS-1 on pre-choruses. Depth switch set to 'Up' position (deep). A Behringer UC200 or Boss CE-5 are cheap substitutes.

Why these settings

Your Twin Reverb is actually closer to Cobain's touring rig than his studio Mesa setup — he used a '65 Twin Reverb extensively live. The Twin's naturally scooped mids require pushing mid to 8 to compensate for the Mesa's mid-forward voicing. Bass dropped to 5 because the Twin has more low-end headroom than the Mesa preamp. Your Strat's stock single-coil bridge pickup is brighter and lower-output than Cobain's JB humbucker — rolling tone to 7 warms it slightly, but the DS-1's compression will mask most of the output difference.

PRO TIPCobain's pick attack was deliberately sloppy and aggressive — he palm-muted loosely and let open strings ring into the distortion for that chaotic, buzzy quality. Use a thin pick (.60mm Tortex orange) and dig in hard near the bridge for the brittle, biting attack on the chorus riff.
