Why these settings

The Frontman 10G is a solid-state practice amp with limited headroom and a bright Fender voicing. Cobain's tone was 100% pedal-driven distortion into a clean amp, so the Frontman's gain is set low (3) to stay clean as a platform. Without a DS-1, cranking the Frontman's gain will produce fizzy solid-state distortion that lacks the DS-1's midrange bark—this is an honest limitation. Mid is pushed to 7 (vs Fender's natural scoop) to recover the upper-mid aggression Cobain got from the Mesa and the DS-1's voicing.
