01Tube Screamer (TS9 or clone) — RECOMMENDED

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for this tone. A TS9, TS Mini, or any TS-style clone (Joyo Vintage OD, Behringer TO800) will tighten the low end and add midrange focus that the Frontman cannot produce alone. Without this pedal, the tone will be loose and fizzy.

Drive 0 · Tone 5 · Level 8

02Noise Gate (Boss NS-2 or similar) — RECOMMENDED

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. At gain 10 on this amp, noise will be significant between palm-muted phrases. A gate cleans up the silence.

Threshold 5 · Decay 3
Why these settings

The Frontman 15G is a solid-state practice amp with no separate channels and limited gain saturation compared to a Dual Rectifier's tube preamp. Gain is maxed to extract every bit of drive available; bass is raised to 7 (vs the Rectifier's 5.5) because the Frontman's small speaker lacks low-end thump; treble is pulled to 6 (vs Rectifier's 7) to avoid the solid-state fizz that replaces tube warmth at high gain. Without a Tube Screamer in front, this tone will sound thin and undefined—the pedal is critical to approximate the tight, compressed attack of the original.

PRO TIPPalm-mute directly over the bridge saddles, not further up the strings—this produces the tight, percussive 'chug' that defines the Monster riff. The Epiphone SG's thinner body will naturally emphasize upper mids; rolling the tone knob to 8 compensates slightly without losing attack.
