The Brown channel on the Katana emulates a modified Marshall-style high-gain voicing, which gets you closer to the Mark IIC+ snarl than the Lead channel's modern saturation. Hetfield's original tone was famously scooped ('smiley face EQ'), so mid stays low at 3. The Katana's Brown voice is slightly darker than a real IIC+, so treble is pushed to 8 and presence to 6 to recover that razor-sharp top-end attack. Gain at 7 provides the saturation without the fizz — the IIC+ wasn't as high-gain as people remember.
