01Distortion Pedal (Boss DS-1 or similar)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Fender Frontman SP-10 is a 10W solid-state practice amp with no real gain staging. Its overdrive channel produces fizzy, thin distortion that cannot approximate the Mark IIC+'s saturation. A DS-1 ($50 new, $30 used) or a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone ($100 new, $50 used) is essential for this tone. Without it, you will get bedroom crunch, not thrash metal.

Why these settings

The Fender SP-10 is a budget solid-state practice amp with a single channel and no presence control — it cannot produce high-gain metal tones on its own. I maxed gain to extract every bit of grit the amp has, scooped mids hard to approximate the Mark IIC+'s V-curve EQ, and boosted bass to compensate for the amp's thin low end. Your single-coil Strat is the opposite of Hetfield's hot humbuckers: expect a thinner, brighter, less compressed sound. A distortion pedal is non-negotiable to get anywhere near this tone.

PRO TIPHetfield's tone lives in his right hand: aggressive, consistent downpicking with the pick angled slightly and striking close to the bridge. Palm-mute hard on the low E and A strings, release for accents. This technique matters more than any amp setting — practice the gallop pattern with a metronome at 212 BPM.
