01Boss MT-2 Metal Zone

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for this tone. The Frontman cannot produce high-gain metal saturation on its own. A Boss DS-1 or MXR Distortion+ are budget alternatives but will lack the tight low end and mid-scoop capability.

Why these settings

The Fender Frontman is a solid-state practice amp with no preamp saturation—it stays clean at all gain levels. The original tone requires high-gain tube saturation with a deeply scooped V-curve EQ. Without a distortion pedal, this tone is unobtainable. Amp gain maxed provides the only available grit; bass raised and mids dropped hard approximate the scoop; treble pushed high compensates for your Strat's brighter single coils vs the original's hot EMG humbuckers.

PRO TIPHetfield's relentless downpicking is 70% of this tone—alternate picking will not sound right. Anchor your palm firmly on the bridge, mute aggressively, and attack each note with a thick pick (1mm+) at a steep angle for maximum chunk.
