RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This is critical for the scooped V-curve EQ that defines the Master of Puppets tone. Place in front of amp. Without this, you will not achieve the signature mid-scoop.

Why these settings

The Champion 100 is a solid-state Fender with inherently scooped, bright voicing — the opposite of the mid-forward Mark IIC+. To compensate: mid is dropped to 2 (the amp already lacks mids), bass reduced from the original 6-7 to 5 (Fender low end is flubby at high gain), and treble raised to 7 to recover the cutting attack the IIC+ naturally provides. The Champion's gain maxes out softer than a Mesa, so 8 is necessary. A GE-7 is essential to carve the V-curve — without it, you get generic high-gain, not Hetfield's surgical scoop.

PRO TIPHetfield's tone lives in his right hand: strict downpicking with the pick angled slightly and planted near the bridge. Palm mute pressure should be firm but not choked — let the low E ring with just enough sustain to feel the chug. Your GIO's Infinity R pickups are medium-hot and will get you close; if it still feels loose, raise the bridge pickup height 1-2mm to tighten the attack.
