01Tube Screamer / TS9 Clone

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for tightening low-end on drop-tuned riffs. Run drive near zero, level maxed to slam the amp's front end. An Ibanez TS9, Boss SD-1, or any TS-style clone works.

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. High-gain drop tuning demands gating for tight stops. Boss NS-2 or ISP Decimator are standard choices.

Why these settings

Your Valveking has looser low-end than a Laney Ironheart, so bass is pulled to 5 (vs original ~4-5) and mids pushed to 6 to compensate for the Valveking's natural mid-scoop. Without the TS-style boost, your chugs will lack definition—gain is set to 7 instead of 8 to avoid mud, but the tone will improve dramatically with a $30 TS clone tightening the signal. Your Blackjack's Seymour Duncan humbuckers are slightly lower output than EMGs, so no gain reduction needed.

PRO TIPTune to Drop B (B-F#-B-E-G#-C#) with at least .011-.056 gauge strings—standard tuning won't get you there. Palm mute directly over the bridge saddles for maximum tightness, and pick aggressively with downstrokes on the chugging sections.
