01Boss DS-1 Distortion

Use as a mid-gain boost rather than full saturation — the DS-1's Dist at 4 adds grit and mids without burying the amp's character. Level at 7 pushes the front end. This approximates the SD-1/TS9 boost role on the original.

Why these settings

The Samick Smart 3 is a small solid-state practice amp with limited headroom and a darker voicing than a JCM800. I raised mids to 8 (vs the typical 7 for JCM800) to compensate for the Samick's scooped character and ensure the galloping riff cuts through. The DS-1 is doing significant work here — kept at moderate Dist to add harmonic content and push without mud, since stacking full DS-1 distortion into amp gain would lose definition. The Suzuki SDG-2's stock pickups are lower output than Murray's hot Seymour Duncans, so the DS-1 boost compensates.

PRO TIPThe Trooper's gallop lives in your picking hand — use strict downstrokes on the galloping 8th notes and keep your palm muting tight and consistent about 1 inch from the bridge saddles. Looser muting = flabby tone, tighter = the iconic Maiden attack.
