Basket Case amp settings — Vox AC30C2

The Green Day guitar tone for “Basket Case”, dialed in for a Vox AC30C2 with a Fender Mustang. Studio version, Dookie (1994). Recorded at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA.

Original rig

Fernandes RST-50 'Blue' (Bill Lawrence L-500XL humbucker, bridge) → Marshall 1959 SLP Plexi 100W 'Pete' with Dookie Mod (cascading gain mod by Martin Golub/CAE). No pedals. Eb tuning.

Crunchy, bright, punchy midrange-forward tone with surprising clarity and definition. Less gain than assumed — articulation comes from picking attack and hot humbucker output.

01Overdrive (TS-style or Blues Driver)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The AC30 Top Boost channel is voiced for chimey cleans and edge-of-breakup, not the thick punch of a modded Plexi. A TS-style OD (Tube Screamer, Ibanez TS9, Boss SD-1) or Blues Driver set for low gain/high level will push the front end into that punchy crunch territory. Without this pedal, you'll get a thinner, more jangly breakup that lacks the Dookie midrange thump.

Why these settings

The AC30 Top Boost is voiced brighter and more chimey than a Plexi, with a treble peak around 3-4kHz vs the Marshall's mid-bark around 2-3kHz. Compensated by cutting treble -0.5 and pushing mids +1 vs original 'knobs straight up' Plexi settings. Your Mustang's single coils are lower output and brighter than the hot L-500XL humbucker on the original — gain pushed +3 to compensate for the output difference, and tone knob rolled to 8 to tame the extra high-end bite. The AC30 won't naturally achieve that thick Plexi punch without an OD pedal in front; without one, expect a more 'British Invasion' crunch rather than American punk thump.

PRO TIPBillie Joe's tone is 'cleaner than you'd think' per his tech — the articulation comes from hard downstroke picking with palm muting, not gain. Dig in with your pick near the bridge, and let the notes breathe between strums. If your Mustang has a phase switch or 'strangle' switch, keep it off/normal.
