Basket Case amp settings — Line 6 Catalyst 200

The Green Day guitar tone for “Basket Case”, dialed in for a Line 6 Catalyst 200 with a Yamaha Pacifica 112V. Studio version, Dookie (1994) — recorded at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley

Original rig

Fernandes RST-50 'Blue' (Bill Lawrence L-500XL bridge humbucker) → Marshall 1959 SLP Plexi 100W with 'Dookie' cascading gain mod → Marshall 1960A 4x12. No pedals.

Tight, punchy pop-punk crunch — more gain than stock Plexi but not metal, aggressive yet warm, fast-attack for downstrummed power chords

Why these settings

The Catalyst's Crunch channel approximates a pushed Plexi. Your Pacifica's bridge humbucker is lower output than the hot L-500XL (~14kΩ), so gain is pushed to 6 to compensate — the original amp ran 'knobs at 10 o'clock' but had the Dookie mod adding extra gain stages. Treble at 6 (not 10) because the Catalyst's digital voicing is brighter than a real Plexi; mid at 6 maintains the punchy bark. No reverb — the recording is bone dry.

PRO TIPTune down to Eb and use aggressive downstroke strumming on the low strings — Billie Joe's right-hand attack is half the tone. Keep your pick angle steep and hit the strings hard; the Dookie sound is as much about velocity as gear.
