RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Rage 158's solid-state gain is thin and fizzy at high settings; a dirt pedal in front with amp gain at 3-4 will get you closer to the Mesa's saturated compression. A used DS-1 runs $30.

Why these settings

The Rage 158 is a practice solid-state amp with a harsh, scooped voice compared to the Mesa Rectifier's thick tube saturation. I pushed mids to 7 (vs original 6) to compensate for the Peavey's natural scoop, dropped bass to 4 (vs original 5-6) because small speakers flub out with too much low-end, and cut treble to 6 to tame solid-state fizz. Without a pedal, this is the closest you'll get — but the tone will lack the original's harmonic compression.

PRO TIPTune to Drop D and palm-mute the open D string HARD on the verse riff — Grohl's tone lives in that percussive, chugging attack. Roll your tone knob to 8 to shave the ice-pick highs your single-coils will add vs his humbuckers.
