RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential to replicate the thick, compressed saturation of a cranked small tube amp. The Sav2's solid-state circuit won't naturally produce that sag and bloom; a TS-style pedal into a cleaner amp setting will get closer. If you add this pedal, drop amp gain to 4.

Why these settings

The Sav2 is a solid-state practice amp with limited natural breakup compared to the original cranked tube Champ. Compensate by pushing gain higher (+8 vs the Champ's volume-dimed approach) and adding mids (+7) to approximate the honky, compressed character. Bass stays low (3) per Tom Dowd's documented approach. Without an overdrive pedal, you'll get close but lack the spongy compression — a cheap TS clone is the single best upgrade for this tone.

PRO TIPClapton's attack on Layla is aggressive and percussive — dig in hard with the pick near the bridge to get that urgent, biting response. The tone comes as much from the right hand as the amp settings.
