Layla amp settings — Nux Mighty 40 BT MKII

The Derek & The Dominos guitar tone for “Layla”, dialed in for a Nux Mighty 40 BT MKII with a Epiphone ES 339. Studio version, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (1970), Criteria Studios Miami

Original rig

1956 Fender Stratocaster 'Brownie' → Fender Champ (5F1 tweed, cranked to 10). Producer Tom Dowd: 'volume all the way up, treble all the way up, bass all the way down.' No pedals.

Raw, urgent small-amp crunch with biting treble, compressed tube saturation, and prominent honky mids from bridge+middle pickup position

01NUX MG-30 — Tube Screamer block (light boost)

Use as a clean boost to push the amp model into saturation and add mid-focus. The original had no pedals, but your ES-339 humbuckers are darker and hotter than Clapton's Strat single-coils — this compensates by tightening the low-end and adding presence.

Why these settings

The original was a cranked 5-watt Champ with single-coils — raw, biting, and trebly. Your ES-339's humbuckers are warmer and higher-output, so I've pushed treble to 9 and cut bass to 2 to recover that nasal bite. The Mighty 40's Tweed model approximates the Champ's compressed breakup; gain at 8 simulates a dimed small amp. Mid at 7 recreates the honky 'cocked-wah' quality of the bridge+middle Strat position that your humbucker can't naturally produce.

PRO TIPClapton's attack was percussive and aggressive on the riff — dig in hard with your pick near the bridge for that urgent, stabbing quality. Roll your guitar's tone knob down to 6-7 during the verse for a slightly rounder rhythm sound, then open it up for the main riff.
