Phantom Bride (feat. Jerry Cantrell) amp settings — fender squier 15

The Deftones guitar tone for “Phantom Bride (feat. Jerry Cantrell)”, dialed in for a fender squier 15 with a ibanez rx160. Studio version, Gore (2016) — Stephen Carpenter's rhythm/lead tone and Jerry Cantrell's guest solo

Original rig

Stephen Carpenter: ESP 8-string baritone guitars, Mesa Boogie Dual/Triple Rectifier, 4x12 cabs with V30s. Jerry Cantrell: G&L Rampage with JB pickup, Friedman BE-100 or Marshall JCM800 modified, Dunlop Cry Baby wah, MXR EVH Phase 90. Recording used heavy layering and studio processing through Matt Hyde's production.

Thick, sludgy, heavily saturated modern metal rhythm with scooped mids and massive low-end; Cantrell's solo cuts through with a tighter, more mid-forward singing lead tone

01Boss DS-1 or similar distortion pedal

RECOMMENDED — not owned. Essential for this tone. A basic DS-1, Metal Zone, or any affordable high-gain distortion pedal is required. The Squier 15 cannot produce Rectifier-level saturation from its preamp alone.

Why these settings

The Fender Squier 15 is a small practice amp with minimal gain and a single 6-8 inch speaker — it cannot physically reproduce Mesa Rectifier saturation. Amp gain at 7 provides its maximum usable dirt but falls drastically short; a distortion pedal is mandatory. Mid pushed to 6 compensates for the amp's loose voicing and helps the Ibanez's humbucker cut through. Bass dropped to 4 prevents the small speaker from farting out under heavy gain.

PRO TIPRoll your Ibanez's tone knob to 7 to tame the fizzy high frequencies that small solid-state amps produce under distortion — this mimics the warmer speaker response of a 4x12 cabinet and gets you closer to that thick Deftones wall of sound.
