The Deftones guitar tone for “Mascara”, dialed in for a Fender Mustang LT25 with a Fender Squire Stratocaster. Studio version, Around the Fur (1997)
ESP Custom (Seymour Duncan JB humbucker) into ADA MP-1 MIDI Tube Preamp, Marshall 9200 Dual Monobloc power amp, and Marshall 1960B 4x12 cabs
| Knob | Setting (0–10) |
|---|---|
| Gain | 8 |
| Bass | 7 |
| Mid | 4 |
| Treble | 5 |
| Reverb | 2 |
| Master | 6 |
The original tone relies on a hot bridge humbucker pushing a high-gain tube preamp, so we use the LT25's high-gain Metal 2000 model. Single coils can sound thin and harsh in Drop C#, so treble is dialed down to 5 and the guitar tone knob rolled back slightly to 8 to add body and tame top-end fizz. Mids are pulled to 4 to replicate the classic ADA MP-1 mid-scoop without vanishing in the mix.
