01Boss DS-1 Distortion (or similar)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Champion 50XL's high-gain voice lacks the tight rectifier compression of the original. A DS-1 or Boss ML-2 Metal Core will add the necessary saturation and definition. Run into the amp's CLEAN voice with amp gain at 2-3 if using this pedal.
The original uses a Mesa Rectifier's tight, compressed high-gain with scooped mids — your Champion 50XL is Fender-voiced with looser low-end and less gain on tap. I've scooped the mids hard (3) to match the Rectifier scoop, pushed bass for chunk, and kept treble restrained since Fenders are already bright. The Champion's gain maxes out softer than a Rectifier, so a distortion pedal is strongly recommended to hit that wall-of-sound saturation.
