The BON JOVI guitar tone for “LIVING ON A PRAYER”, dialed in for a Fender Champion 50XL with a IBAÑEZ RG470DX. Studio version, Slippery When Wet (1986)

| Knob | Setting (0–10) |

01Overdrive/Boost Pedal (TS-style — e.g., Ibanez TS9, Boss SD-1, Joyo Vintage Overdrive)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Run direct into amp input. This tightens low-end and pushes mids into JCM800-style territory the Champion lacks natively. Without this, the tone will be looser and less defined.
02Talk Box (MXR M222 or Heil HT-1)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. ESSENTIAL for the intro hook. No pedal, amp setting, or wah approximates this effect — it requires routing signal through a tube into your mouth. Without it, skip the intro or accept it will sound fundamentally different.
The Champion 50XL is a Fender-voiced solid-state amp — naturally scooped and bright vs. the mid-forward, touch-sensitive JCM800. I pushed mid to 7 (vs. original's 6) and dropped bass to 4 (vs. 5) to compensate for the Fender's looser low-end. Treble stays at 6; the Ibanez humbuckers are already darker than Sambora's hot Kramer pickups, so the Champion's brightness helps here. A TS-style pedal is strongly recommended to add the midrange push and compression the amp's overdrive channel lacks.
