01Big Muff Pi (or any thick fuzz/distortion)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This tone is impossible without a fuzz pedal. A Big Muff, Rat, or any thick fuzz gets you there. Budget option: Donner Dark Mouse or Behringer SF300.
The Ibanez GA-10 is a small solid-state practice amp with limited headroom and a bright, thin voicing. The original AC30 is warm and chimey with natural compression. I dropped treble to 4 (vs original 6) to compensate for the GA-10's harshness, pushed bass to 6 for thickness the small speaker lacks, and set amp gain very low at 2 because the fuzz pedal must provide all the dirt — stacking amp gain with fuzz will create undefined mush. Without the fuzz pedal, this tone is unachievable; the amp's onboard distortion cannot replicate the Valveslapper's thick, sputtery character.
