RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This is essential; the Yamaha GA15 cannot produce high-gain metal tones from its preamp alone. A Boss DS-1 ($50 new) or Joyo JF-02 ($30) will get you there. Run the amp nearly clean and let the pedal be your gain source.
The Yamaha GA15 is a 15-watt solid-state practice amp with limited gain and a small 6.5" speaker—it cannot reach Peavey 5150-level saturation regardless of knob position. Amp gain is set low (3) to stay clean and avoid muddy breakup; all distortion must come from an external pedal. Bass is conservative (4) because the small speaker loses definition with heavy low-end. Treble pushed to 6 compensates for the ERG121C's darker humbucker voicing vs the brighter ESP pickups on the original.
