Pride and joy amp settings — Zoom G6

The Stevie Ray Vaughan guitar tone for “Pride and joy”, dialed in for a Zoom G6 with a Yamaha Pacifica 112V. Studio version, Texas Flood (1983), recorded November 24, 1982 at Jackson Browne's Down Town Studio

Original rig

1962/63 Fender Stratocaster 'Number One' with 1959 pickups, heavy .013 gauge strings tuned to Eb → Fender Vibroverb (1964 blackface, 1x15 JBL D130F) and Dumble Dumbleland Special → Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer (Drive 2-3, Tone 4, Level 9-10)

Fat, warm edge-of-breakup Texas blues crunch with woody mid push, touch-sensitive dynamics, percussive attack, thick single-coil tone with strong note separation

CRITICAL: TS always on, even for 'clean' parts — this is the secret to SRV's woody mid push and compressed sustain. Use Zoom G6's built-in Tube Screamer model.

Why these settings

Your Pacifica's Alnico V pickups are brighter and lower-output than SRV's hot vintage single coils with .013s — compensate by pushing mid +1 (to 7) vs a true Vibroverb baseline and rolling tone knob to 8 to tame ice-pick highs. The Zoom G6's Fender blackface model lacks the 1x15 JBL's speaker thump, so bass stays moderate at 5 rather than higher. Reverb is 0 — the studio recording was bone dry despite the amp's spring reverb.

PRO TIPSRV held his pick sideways (striking with the shoulder, not the point) for that fat, rounded attack — try angling your pick 45° and dig in hard with your thumb anchored on the low E; the tone lives in the right hand aggression, not the gain knob.
