01Chorus (any analog-voiced chorus pedal)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for this tone. Boss CE-2, MXR Analog Chorus, or TC Electronic Corona are affordable options. Slow rate, deep modulation creates the signature wash.

Rate 2 · Depth 6

02Digital Delay

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Boss DD-3/DD-7 or any digital delay. Set around 400-500ms with moderate repeats. The original used dual delays; one will get you close.

03Reverb (hall or plate type)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. If your amp reverb is spring-type, use it maxed. A dedicated hall reverb pedal (TC Hall of Fame, Boss RV-6) is ideal. Long decay, high mix, the reverb should almost overwhelm the dry signal.

Why these settings

The Rextone TG-15 is a small practice amp with limited headroom and basic onboard reverb. Keep gain at 2 to maintain a clean platform—shoegaze tones are built on pristine cleans, not amp dirt. Treble at 6 compensates for the Jazzmaster's darker neck pickup versus the brighter Telecasters used originally. Without chorus, delay, and reverb pedals, this tone is fundamentally unobtainable; the amp's spring reverb cranked to 8 provides only a fraction of the ambient depth required.

PRO TIPRoll the Jazzmaster's rhythm circuit tone roller halfway down and use the rhythm circuit (neck pickup with dedicated tone control) for an even darker, more submerged texture—this approximates the 'underwater' quality of the FX500's mid-cut EQ that defined the Soft Focus patch.
