01Distortion pedal (Boss DS-1 or similar)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Champion 20's gain circuit cannot reach the saturation level of Cherry Cigarettes. A basic distortion pedal (DS-1 clone ~$30) is essential. With the pedal as your gain source, set the amp's Voice switch to the cleanest position and drop amp gain to 2-3.
The Fender Champion 20 is a practice amp with limited gain — even maxed, it produces mild crunch, not the smooth high-gain saturation on this track. The amp lacks mid and presence knobs (bass/treble only), so those are null. With a distortion pedal handling gain, keep the amp relatively clean (gain 2-3, Voice on clean setting) to avoid mud from double-gain stacking. Bass at 4 tightens the small 8" speaker; treble at 6 preserves pick attack without fizz.
