Bohemian Rhapsody amp settings — Evander GA-20

The Queen guitar tone for “Bohemian Rhapsody”, dialed in for a Evander GA-20 with a Squier Affinity Stratocaster. Studio version, A Night at the Opera (1975)

Original rig

Brian May Red Special (homemade, 3 single coils wired in series/parallel) → Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster → Vox AC30 Top Boost channel. Played with a sixpence coin for pick attack.

Bright, singing overdrive with upper-harmonic sparkle and creamy sustain — cuts through with presence but retains body for multi-tracked harmony layers

Why these settings

The Evander GA-20 is an unrecognized amp model, so I cannot verify its exact voicing or available controls — presence and reverb set to null as they may not exist. Values are based on the original tone's frequency character: moderately high mids for that singing quality, bright treble for the Rangemaster-style sparkle, and gain at 6 to replicate AC30 Top Boost crunch. Your Squier Affinity Strat's ceramic single coils are brighter and lower-output than May's series-wired Red Special pickups, so I dropped treble by 1 from the original's 8 to compensate.

PRO TIPBrian May used a British sixpence coin as a pick — the serrated edge and stiffness create his distinctive attack and harmonic overtones. Try a heavy 1.5mm+ pick held at an angle, brushing the string with the edge rather than flat, to approximate that articulation on your Strat.
