01Distortion Pedal (e.g. Boss DS-1, MXR Distortion+, or budget clone)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This is essential: Randy's tone came from the MXR Distortion+ into a relatively clean Plexi. Your 15W practice amp cannot produce this saturation alone. A DS-1 or Distortion+ clone is the minimum requirement.

Distortion/Gain 4 · Tone 6 · Level/Output 8
Why these settings

Your 15W combo is a small solid-state practice amp with minimal preamp gain and likely only bass/treble EQ (no mid knob — set to null). The original tone requires a Distortion+ pedal pushing a Plexi; without a dirt pedal, this tone is unreachable. Keep amp gain at 8 as a platform, bass LOW at 3 (Randy's secret for tight riffs), treble 7 for cut. The Strat's single-coil bridge is brighter and lower output than Randy's Les Paul humbucker — roll tone to 8 to tame ice-pick highs.

PRO TIPRandy's fast riffs stay clear because of the extremely low bass setting (~2-3 on original). Resist the urge to add low end — the tight, almost thin low-end is what makes the galloping riff articulate. Pick closer to the bridge with a medium pick for that aggressive attack.
