Breed amp settings — Fender Twin Reverb

The Nirvana guitar tone for “Breed”, dialed in for a Fender Twin Reverb with a Epiphone Les Paul Standard 60s. Studio version, Nevermind (1991) — produced by Butch Vig at Sound City Studios

Original rig

Fender Competition Mustang (humbucker) → ProCo Rat (split signal: one to Fender Bassman, one DI'd into console). Boss DS-1 also used on album for other tracks.

Aggressive, raw, upper-mid forward with layered saturation and tight low-end. Abrasive and angry but retains note clarity.

01ProCo Rat 2 (or Rat clone)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This is the actual pedal used on 'Breed.' The Rat's Filter knob works backward (lower = brighter). Set around 4 for upper-mid aggression without ice-pick highs. A Boss DS-1 is a workable substitute if you can't get a Rat.

Why these settings

Your Twin Reverb is the correct amp family—Kurt used clean Fenders as pedal platforms. The Twin has more headroom than the Bassman, so push mids to 8 to compensate for the Twin's natural mid-scoop. Your Epiphone's humbuckers are hotter than Kurt's Mustang, so the Rat's Distortion can stay at 6 instead of higher. Reverb stays at 0; the recording is bone dry.

PRO TIPKurt's right-hand attack was critical—he dug in hard with downstrokes on the main riff, almost hitting the strings percussively. Without a Rat, you genuinely cannot replicate this tone; the Twin's clean headroom means it won't break up naturally at sane volumes. Budget $50-70 for a Rat clone (Mooer Black Secret, Donner Dark Mouse) and you'll have authentic Nevermind tones across the whole album.
