01Distortion Pedal (Boss DS-1 or similar)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Frontman 10G cannot produce high-gain metal distortion on its own. A DS-1 ($50 new) or Boss MT-2 Metal Zone ($100) is essential to get anywhere near this tone. Without a dirt pedal, this tone is unobtainable on your amp.

Why these settings

The Frontman 10G is a 10-watt solid-state practice amp with a single clean-ish channel — it has no high-gain capability whatsoever. The original Mark IIC+ ran gain at 7-8 with a deeply scooped V-curve EQ; your amp's gain maxed out won't approach that saturation, hence the critical need for an external distortion pedal. I've scooped the mids harder than the original (2 vs 3-4) because the Frontman has a boxy, mid-forward solid-state character that needs compensation. Treble dropped from 6-7 to 6 to avoid the amp's harsh transistor fizz.

PRO TIPHetfield's tone lives in his picking hand — relentless all-downstroke palm muting with the pick angled slightly and attacking close to the bridge. Practice the 'gallop' pattern (down-down-up) with your palm barely lifting off the strings. No amount of gear compensates for weak right-hand technique on thrash rhythm.
