01Distortion pedal (e.g., Boss DS-1, Pro Co RAT, or Boss MT-2)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The GA-15 practice amp cannot produce the tight high-gain saturation needed for this tone on its own. A distortion pedal is essential. If using a distortion pedal, set amp gain to 3-4 and use the clean channel to avoid mud.

Why these settings

The original uses a high-gain tube amp stack worth thousands; the GA-15 is a budget solid-state practice amp that will not produce this tone without a distortion pedal. I maxed the amp gain and scooped mids to approximate the Mark IIC+ character, but the tight low-end punch and harmonic saturation will be absent. Your Pacifica's Alnico V humbuckers are lower output and brighter than EMG 81s, so I pushed treble +1 and bass +1.5 vs original settings to compensate.

PRO TIPHetfield's tone is 50% technique—use aggressive, consistent downpicking with your pick angled slightly and palm-mute tight against the bridge. This creates the percussive 'chug' that defines the riff. Without a distortion pedal, this will sound thin; a used Boss DS-1 or Joyo Ultimate Drive for under $30 gets you far closer than any amp setting can.
