01EHX Soul Food

Run into clean bass amp as primary gain source. Soul Food is a Klon-style OD—it won't achieve true high-gain metal saturation but provides the closest dirt available.

02Dedicated Distortion Pedal (Boss DS-1, MT-2, or similar)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. A true distortion pedal is essential for this tone. The Soul Food is a transparent overdrive that cannot produce the saturated, scooped metal gain this song requires. Budget options: Boss DS-1 (~$50), Behringer UM300 (~$25), Joyo US Dream (~$35).

Why these settings

A Crate bass amp cannot produce high-gain metal tones from its preamp—bass amps are designed for clean headroom and low-frequency response, not saturated distortion. The Soul Food adds grit but stays transparent by design. I've set the amp nearly clean with treble high to let the pedal cut through, and bass conservative to avoid flub through a bass speaker. A dedicated distortion pedal is the missing piece here.

PRO TIPPalm-mute tightly right at the bridge saddles for the chunky rhythm attack. The GRG170DX's Infinity R humbucker has decent output—lowering the pickup slightly (add 1mm gap) can tighten the low-end response and reduce mud when pushing a pedal this hard.
