The John mayer guitar tone for “Gravity”, dialed in for a Boss Katana 50 MkII with a Squier Affinity Stratocaster. Studio version, Continuum (2006) — main rhythm tone
Two-Rock Custom Reverb Signature / Dumble Steel String Singer + Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster ('The Black One') + Klon Centaur / Marshall Bluesbreaker
| Knob | Setting (0–10) |
|---|---|
| Gain | 4 |
| Bass | 6 |
| Mid | 4 |
| Treble | 6 |
| Reverb | 4 |
| Master | 5 |
01Katana Onboard Booster (Blues Driver block)
Enable onboard Katana Booster (Green/Blues Driver mode) to emulate Mayer's transparent transparent edge-of-breakup overdrive
02Marshall Bluesbreaker / Keeley Katana Clean Boost
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned; adds authentic Mayer-style mid-bloom and touch sensitivity
The Clean amp type on the Katana captures the massive headroom of Mayer's Two-Rock and Dumble setup, so gain is kept low at 4. The Squier Affinity Strat's ceramic single-coils run slightly thinner and brighter than Mayer's Custom Shop pickups, so mids are pulled to 4 and bass is boosted to 6 for warm body, while treble sits at 6 for glassy presence. If adding a dedicated Bluesbreaker-style pedal later, keep the Katana clean and let the pedal provide the edge-of-breakup push.
