Grace amp settings — Fender 25r

The Jeff Buckley guitar tone for “Grace”, dialed in for a Fender 25r with a Yamaha Pacifica 112V. Studio version, Grace album (1994)

Original rig

Fender Vibroverb '63 Reissue (rented, 1x15, 40W) + 1983 Fender Telecaster Toploader (stock pickups at time of recording) + Alesis Quadraverb (modified 'Taj Mahal' reverb preset) + Mesa Boogie for driven sections

Shimmering clean with lush hall reverb on verses, building to warm pushed tube crunch on climaxes; bell-like Telecaster clarity throughout

01Overdrive (TS-style or Blues Driver)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for the climax crunch sections ('and she tied you to a kitchen chair'). Without this, you can approximate by pushing gain to 5-6 and picking harder, but it won't have the same bloom and compression. A Joyo Vintage Overdrive (~$30) or Boss BD-2 gets you there.

Why these settings

The Frontman 25R is a solid-state practice amp with less natural compression than Buckley's tube Vibroverb, so the reverb does heavy lifting here—crank it to 7 to approximate that cavernous 'Taj Mahal' hall sound. Your Pacifica's AlNiCo V single coils are brighter and thinner than Buckley's Telecaster, so I rolled treble back to 6 (original was likely 6.5) and boosted mid to 6 to add body. The 25R won't break up musically at bedroom volumes, hence the OD pedal recommendation for the driven sections.

PRO TIPBuckley's signature swells come from riding the guitar's volume knob—keep your pinky on it and roll from 6 to 10 during the build-ups. This gives that breathing, dynamic attack that defined his playing on this track.
