01Distortion Pedal (Boss DS-1 or similar)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The JE21 is a small practice amp without enough gain staging to reach JCM800 crunch territory. A basic distortion pedal is essential to get this tone. Set amp gain to 3 and let the pedal provide the saturation.

Why these settings

The Acoustic Solutions JE21 is a 20W solid-state practice amp with limited gain and no presence control. Compared to the original JCM800 settings, I pushed gain to maximum (8) to extract any available crunch, cut bass from 5 to 4 to tighten the low-end on a small speaker, and boosted mids from 6 to 7 because the JE21 lacks the natural mid-push of a Marshall. Treble dropped from 7 to 6 because small solid-state amps get harsh quickly. Without a distortion pedal, you will only achieve a driven clean tone — the galloping Maiden crunch requires external gain.

PRO TIPThe Maiden gallop tone relies heavily on precise palm-muting pressure — rest your picking hand lightly on the strings just ahead of the bridge saddles, not directly on them. Too heavy and it chokes; too light and it loses definition. Practice the triplet gallop (down-down-up) at slow tempo until the muted notes pop evenly.
