01Distortion pedal (Boss DS-1, ProCo RAT, or similar)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The GX25R's preamp cannot reach the Marshall Dookie Mod's cascaded gain structure. A basic distortion pedal is essential to get the tight, articulate crunch. With the pedal, keep amp gain at 3 and let the pedal provide all saturation.

Why these settings

The GX25R is an unrecognized budget solid-state amp — values are based on near-universal knob functions. Your Squier CV 60s has single coils vs the original's hot humbucker, so mid is pushed +1 to compensate for the thinner output. Bass is cut -1 to keep the small speaker tight. The original tone came from a heavily modded cascaded-gain Marshall that a practice amp cannot replicate from preamp alone — a distortion pedal is mandatory to reach the gain structure.

PRO TIPTune to Eb standard to match the record. The original tone has less gain than you'd expect — Billie Joe's attack and the L-500XL's output did the work. Pick hard near the bridge with downstrokes for that tight punk chunk.
