01High-Gain Distortion (RECOMMENDED — Boss HM-2W, TC Electronic Eyemaster, or Revv G3)
REQUIRED — not currently owned. The GA-20 is a clean jazz amp with zero high-gain capability. Without a metal distortion pedal, this tone is impossible. A Boss MT-2 or similar would also work.
02Noise Gate (RECOMMENDED — Boss NS-2 or MXR Noise Gate)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Duplantier uses a noise gate to keep high-gain tight during palm-muted sections and dead stops.
The Ibanez GA-20 is a 5-watt nylon-string classical/jazz amp—it has no distortion circuit whatsoever. Cranking its gain to 10 produces mild breakup at best. The Strat's single coils are also 180 degrees from Duplantier's high-output humbuckers. A dedicated metal distortion pedal is mandatory; the amp then serves purely as a clean power stage. I raised mids to 8 (vs Duplantier's 6) to compensate for the Strat's scooped single-coil voice and pulled treble to 6 to prevent ice-pick highs.
