Still got the blues amp settings — Carlsbro Kickstar_10b

The Gary moor guitar tone for “Still got the blues”, dialed in for a Carlsbro Kickstar_10b with a Kaysen K-EG5. Studio version, Still Got the Blues album (1990, Virgin Records)

Original rig

1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard (neck pickup, tone rolled to 6) → Marshall Guv'nor pedal (Gain 7, Mid 10) → Marshall JTM45 reissue (clean, Mid 9, Treble 7) → Marshall 1960B 4x12 with EV speakers. Subtle Roland Dimension D chorus on rhythm parts.

Fat, singing lead tone with extreme midrange emphasis, long sustain, and vocal-like phrasing. Clean rhythm parts with subtle chorus width.

01Distortion/Overdrive Pedal (RECOMMENDED — not owned)

CRITICAL for this tone. A Boss DS-1, Joyo Ultimate Drive, or any Marshall-style distortion will get you closer. Moore's Guv'nor was the ONLY gain source — the amp was clean. Without a drive pedal, you cannot authentically replicate this tone.

Gain/Drive 7 · Tone/Mid 10 · Level/Output 6
Why these settings

The Carlsbro Kickstart 10B is a small solid-state practice amp with limited headroom and a basic 3-band EQ. It cannot replicate the JTM45's tube compression or the Guv'nor's mid-heavy saturation. I've maxed the mid control and pushed gain to 7 to approximate the thick lead voice, but the amp's preamp will sound fizzy and thin compared to the original. Without a dedicated overdrive pedal, this tone is fundamentally unobtainable — Moore's entire distortion came from the Guv'nor, not the amp.

PRO TIPRoll your guitar's tone knob to 6 on the neck pickup — this is how Moore achieved his 'woman tone' without mud. Use your picking hand position: play closer to the neck for the syrupy sustain on melodies, move toward the bridge for the slightly brighter phrases. Finger vibrato width is everything here — slow, wide, and vocal.
