TORE UP amp settings — Vault GA10

The Don Toliver guitar tone for “TORE UP”, dialed in for a Vault GA10 with a VAULT RG1 Soloist. Studio version, Hardstone Psycho (2024) — sampled guitar riff from 'Industry Sets In' by She Died Real Pretty (2010)

Original rig

The guitar riff is sampled from She Died Real Pretty's 'Industry Sets In' — original recording likely used high-gain tube amp (Marshall JCM800 or similar) with humbuckers, cranked for brash hair metal distortion. Don Toliver's production by BBYKOBE & Spikes processed the sample with additional compression and saturation for that aggressive, in-your-face wall of distortion.

Brash, aggressive hair metal riff — saturated high-gain with scooped mids, tight palm-muted chug, and searing upper-mid bite. Raw, confrontational, and deliberately abrasive.

01Distortion Pedal (RECOMMENDED — Boss DS-1, Behringer TO800, or any affordable high-gain distortion)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Vault GA10 is a small solid-state practice amp that cannot achieve the saturated hair metal distortion this tone requires from the amp alone. A distortion pedal is essential. When using the pedal, drop amp gain to 3-4 and let the pedal be your gain source.

Why these settings

The Vault GA10 is a budget 10W practice amp with limited gain and a small speaker — it physically cannot produce the wall-of-saturation hair metal tone on its own. I've maxed the amp gain as a starting point, but the tone will remain thin and fizzy without an external distortion pedal. When you add the recommended pedal, drop amp gain to 3-4 to avoid muddy double-gain stacking. The RG1 Soloist's humbuckers are appropriate for this aggressive tone.

PRO TIPFor that tight hair metal chug, palm mute firmly right at the bridge saddles and pick aggressively with downstrokes — the original riff's punch comes from picking attack as much as gain. Roll your tone knob to 8 to tame any harsh fizz from the small speaker while keeping the bite.
