The Crate GFX-30 solid-state overdrive channel uses a single Shape control in place of a traditional midrange, so set Gain to 7 to replicate the saturation of a cranked 5W Tweed Champ without modern high-gain fuzz. Keep the Bass trimmed to 4 to mimic the small 8-inch speaker's tight, natural low-end rolloff on the record. With an added tweed or TS-style overdrive pedal later, switch to the Clean channel with gain low to let the pedal create the dynamic edge-of-breakup compression.
