My own summer amp settings — Friedman Small Box 50
The Deftones guitar tone for “My own summer”, dialed in for a Friedman Small Box 50 with a Fender Player Stratocaster. Studio version, Around the Fur (1997)
ESP Stef B-7 (7-string, Seymour Duncan JB bridge) → Marshall JMP-1 preamp → Mesa/Boogie Strategy 400 power amp
| Knob | Setting (0–10) |
|---|---|
| Gain | 7 |
| Bass | 4 |
| Mid | 5 |
| Treble | 6 |
| Presence | 4 |
| Reverb | 0 |
| Master | 5 |
The Friedman Small Box is inherently more mid-forward and tighter than the scooped Rectifier/JMP-1 combo, so mids are set at 5 rather than the original's 3.5 to avoid over-scooping on an already punchy amp. Bass is pulled to 4 because single coils lack the low-end thump of a 7-string humbucker—pushing bass higher would create flub without the source material. Treble raised to 6 compensates for the Strat's brighter, thinner voicing versus the JB humbucker's thick output.
