01Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz (or similar fuzz/distortion)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The FZ-2 is discontinued but a Boss HM-2 clone, EHX Big Muff, or any aggressive fuzz with a low-mid focus will get you close. This pedal is essential for the gritty texture on this track. Run into amp's clean setting if using a high-gain fuzz.
The Pyleusa is a basic solid-state practice amp with limited headroom and a thin, bright voicing compared to Carpenter's massive rack rig. I pushed gain to 8 to extract maximum saturation, kept bass at 5 (not higher—small speakers mud out fast), and rolled treble down to 4 because your Strat's single coils are far brighter and thinner than his JB humbuckers. Without a fuzz pedal, you will not achieve the upper-octave grit that defines this tone—the amp alone cannot replicate it.
