01Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz (or similar octave fuzz)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The FZ-2's 'Fuzz II' mode adds the signature gritty octave-up character. Without this pedal, use the Katana's built-in Metal Zone or HM-2 effect block set to moderate gain with tone rolled back, or engage the amp boost and push gain to 9.
The Katana's Brown channel approximates the Marshall-voiced saturation of Carpenter's rig. Mids stay scooped at 4 to match the nu-metal thump. Your RG421's Quantum humbuckers are hotter than Carpenter's JBs, so gain stays at 8 rather than pushing higher. The FZ-2 is critical to this tone — without it, use the Katana's Boss Tone Studio to load an octave fuzz or Metal Zone block.
