Why these settings

The HG 10B is a small solid-state practice amp with limited headroom and a darker voicing than a cranked JCM800. Gain is pushed to 8 to compensate for the lack of tube saturation. Mids are set at 4 (slightly scooped) because the amp lacks the natural mid-bark of a Marshall — going lower would make it disappear in the mix. Without an overdrive pedal, you will not achieve the tight, compressed attack Zakk gets; the amp alone will sound fuzzy and loose at high gain.
