01Overdrive pedal (Tube Screamer style or Boss SD-1)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for this tone. The Twin Reverb is a pristine clean amp that cannot produce pop-punk crunch on its own. A TS-style overdrive or Boss SD-1 ($50-80 new) will get you there. Set amp gain to 3-4 (just below breakup) and let the pedal do the dirt work.
The Twin Reverb is a loud, clean, scooped-mid amp — the opposite of the mid-forward Marshall/Mesa crunch on the original. I've pushed the mid control to 7 (vs a Marshall's typical 5) to compensate for the Fender's natural mid-scoop, and set treble conservatively at 6 because the Twin's treble shelf is already bright. The Strat's bridge single-coil is brighter and lower-output than the humbuckers on the original, so the recommended OD pedal compensates with extra level and a rolled-back tone knob at 7 to avoid ice-pick highs.
