01High-Gain Distortion Pedal (e.g., Boss MT-2, MXR Fullbore Metal, or TC Electronic Dark Matter)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Marshall MG10R cannot produce Bogner Uberschall-level saturation. A metal-voiced distortion pedal is essential. Run the amp on its cleanest setting when using this pedal.

Why these settings

The Marshall MG10R is a 10-watt solid-state practice amp with limited gain and no presence control—it cannot physically reach Uberschall saturation levels. The original tone requires cascaded high-gain stages that this amp lacks entirely. I've set amp gain to 3 (near-clean platform) because the RECOMMENDED distortion pedal must be the gain source; stacking amp overdrive with a dirt pedal creates mud. Mid pushed to 6 compensates for the Yamaha's ceramic humbuckers being darker than Invaders, and treble at 7 recovers the attack lost through a small speaker.

PRO TIPPalm-mute tightly right at the bridge saddles for that chunky City of Evil chug—Gates keeps his picking hand anchored almost on top of the strings to get maximum definition on the galloping rhythms.
